Physiology:  Prof. Dr. Zebeli

Qendrim Zebeli is Professor of Animal Nutrition and Director of Christian-Doppler-Laboratory for Innovative Gut Health Concepts in Livestock at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. Prof. Zebeli has a strong interest in using systems biology approaches to elucidate the role of nutrition on animal health and smart prevention.

In his talk, Prof. Zebeli will give an overview of the system biology approaches used in animal sciences. The focus will especially be on the use of proteomics and metabolomics approaches in cattle research. The introduction of the system biology a few decades ago has revolutionized animal sciences and health. Instead of the old paradigm "one parameter one disease", systems biology provides a much deeper view of the interactions occurring in the body, advancing our knowledge in understanding processes that before were unreachable, and also prevent and treat animals more efficaciously.

Microbiome: Prof. Dr. Metzler-Zebeli

Barbara Metzler-Zebeli is a Professor and the Head of the Nutritional Physiology Department at the University of

Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. Her current project is about studying the interactions between gut microbiota

and animal growth.

Title: Dietary phosphorus as modulator of the gut microbiota in monogastric farm animals

This talk will give an overview about the impact of alterations in the dietary P supply on the microbial taxonomy and

functional metabolism in monogastric livestock species and delineate the consequences the changes in microbial

abundances and fermentation activity may have for the host animal. Existing data on the dietary P-gut microbiota-

relationship should be used for nutritional optimization to promote gut homeostasis, animal performance and food safety.
